Greenhouse HeatersA wide choice of greenhouse heater fuel types are available, but the most popular choices are Gas, Electric and Paraffin: Gas heaters are more satisfactory, especially if there is no electricity, but large cylinders are heavy. Electric heaters are clean, easily controlled and disease-promoting humidity is not produced, but installing electricity outdoors is a job for the professional electrician. Paraffin heaters are inexpensive and no cables required but thermostatic control is not practical and regular attention is essential.
Sizing your greenhouse heaterThe size of greenhouse heater you require depends on a number of variables: the volume of the area to be heated; the aspect of the greenhouse; what materials it is constructed from (wood is a better insulator than aluminium, and glass is better than polythene). The outside temperature is also an important factor, with Scotish growers needing more heat than Cornish growers. As a general "rule of thumb", to be kept at 40 degree F you will need a greenhouse heater with a wattage 10 times the surface area. e.g. 6ft x 8ft greenhouse will have a surface area of about 208 sq.ft so will need a 2080w(2kW) greenhouse heater. To maintain a temperature around 55 degree F approximately twice the amount of heat will be required. For commercial greenhouses, sometimes you will need a number of greenhouse heaters and also circulating fans to ensure the warmer air is evenly distributed. |
