Mist Propagator and Mist Propagation
Mist Propagation, or mist prop as it is known colloquially, is one of the most effective ways of rooting cuttings and germinating seedlings, especially for varieties that are difficult to propagate successfully. Mist propagation is mainly used by commercial growers who grow for profit, although keen gardeners can also benefit from mist propagation.
Unlike a traditional propagator, which just warms the root zone, mist propagation warms the root zone using a heated mat and then has overhead sprinkler lines to cool the tops of the plants. The sprinklers are under the control of a mist propagation controller. The mist propagation controller will work with a wet leaf sensor to ensure that the tops of the leaves are always kept moist. The differential between a cool top on the seedling and the warmth of the root zone will promote growth. As the tops of the leaves are being kept cool, when using mist propagation, the plants are never covered over with polythene.
Mist propagation lines use very fine mist nozzles to produce a droplet size that will sit on the leaves of the plant. The output of the nozzles is low, to ensure that the compost does not become soggy. Connected to the mist propagation unit, is a wet leaf sensor. As its name suggests, the wet leaf sensor mimics the evaporation rate of a leaf. As the sensor dries, it triggers another short burst from the mist propagation unit, to recoat the leaves with moisture. As the wet leaf relies on evaporation, it is completely weather sensitive, misting more often on a hot day, and infrequently during the night or in dull weather.
Access Irrigation and Access Garden Products have been providing mist propagation solutions since the 1960's for both commercial growers and keen gardeners.
