Bench Heating
When growing in a greenhouse, plant growth can be enhanced if the plant root zone is warmed. The best way to achieve this is using a bench heating system.
For small scale bench heating either soil warming cables or heat mats can be used. For commercial scale bench heating, water filled tubes are used, set in a bed of polystyrene, and run from a domestic central heating boiler.
For most domestic bench heating applications, electric warming cables are used. The cheapest method is a soil warming cable, which consists of a long cable which warms up. Traditionally a sand bed is constructed to ensure the heat is evenly distributed around the bench, however as sand is heavy, the bench heated has to be sturdy.
For heat mats, the cost of the heat mat is higher, but there is less work to do to prepare the bench for heating. The mat can simply be unrolled onto the bench. Normally a layer of polystyrene is laid below the bench and a layer of capillary matting placed over the top of the bench. One drawback when bench heating with a heat mat is that the heat mat has to be manufactured to the size required. The size and the shape cannot be altered afterwards.
A warm root zone on the bench can be combined with a mist propagation system. The warm roots and cool top of the plant will combine to promote growth.
