Paraffin Heaters
A paraffin heater is a low cost way of adding heat to a greenhouse or cold frame, with a heater costing around £30 for a good quality make. Paraffin heaters are ideal where only an occasional heat source is needed, for example where a cold snap is forecast and the greenhouse needs to be kept frost free.
Generally a paraffin heater will have two burners, giving an output of around 600 watts with both burners in operation. If only one burner is lit, then the output is halved but the burn time will double. Generally paraffin heaters will hold around 20 - 40 hours of paraffin.
In a greenhouse environment, it is important to choose a paraffin heater with a chimney, as the chimney will draw the heat upwards, giving a larger area for the heat to radiate from. The chimney will also ensure that the fuel burns cleanly.
With a paraffin heater, modern paraffin fuels will burn cleanly, with no harmful fumes. It is important, however, to ensure that there is sufficient ventilation into the greenhouse, otherwise the paraffin heater will not burn properly, giving off fumes and sooty smoke.
One by product of paraffin heaters is carbon dioxide, which is given off as the paraffin heater operates. In a closed environment such as a greenhouse, a carbon dioxide rich atmosphere is beneficial to the plants, which absorb carbon dioxide.
