The Access Propagator
A propagator is designed to speed up the rooting of cuttings and the germination of seedlings. A propagator will also increase the success rate, compared to trying to propagate on a windowsill of a cold greenhouse. A propagator can vary in size from a small windowsill sized unit providing bottom heat for seed trays to an entire glasshouse with heat mats for bottom heat and mist propagation providing cooling mist for the seedlings and cuttings.
A small heated propagator will raise the compost temperature, increasing germination rates for cuttings and seedlings. The top of the propagator seed tray is normally covered to prevent the compost drying out. On small systems, there is normally a simple heat calibration unit to increase or decrease the output power of the heated propagator base.
A larger, more commercial propagator will have a covered top with lift up sides, and a heated base with probe thermostat. The thermostat can be placed in the compost of a sample seed tray, to ensure the compost is always at the correct rooting temperature.
For the best possible results a mist propagation propagator is used, which has a heated mat with a probe thermostat and overhead mist lines which are controlled by a mist propagation controller. The tops of seed trays are kept uncovered, allowing the mist to evaporate.
Access Irrigation and Access Garden Products have been providing propagator solutions since the 1960's for both commercial growers and keen gardeners.
