The Propane Greenhouse Heater
A propane greenhouse heater is ideal for medium and larger sized greenhouses, glasshouses and polytunnels. Propane gas cylinders are used to supply the heat, giving independence from potential problems with the mains electricity or gas supply. Propane greenhouse heaters also have the advantage that they can be installed by the user - natural gas heaters by contrast have to be installed by a CORGI registered installer.
A propane greenhouse heater will also need a regulator valve on the outlet of the gas bottle. For larger installations, a changeover valve will allow two gas bottles to be used, automatically switching the propane greenhouse heater from one bottle to the other as one supply becomes exhausted. A gas gauge can also be fitted to the propane bottle to give an indication of how much gas is in the bottle.
Propane greenhouse heaters come in a number of outputs. The output required depends on the area to be heated, how well insulated it is, the minimum outside temperature and also the minimum temperature the gas greenhouse heater will be required to maintain. The majority of propane greenhouse heaters will have a thermostat built-in. This allows the propane greenhouse heater to be temperature responsive, saving gas. Most thermostats on smaller heaters need no electricity to run them, although some larger commercial propane greenhouse heaters do have electronic thermostats, which do need a power source. These are chosen when the temperature needs to be monitored more accurately. Electronic thermostats also have the advantage that the thermostat can be mounted away from the gas greenhouse heater.
