BS – 10ft x 4ft cold frame on Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast
We are front line here in North Cornwall and all the Atlantic storms hit us first full blast but the frame has survived countless of them including the latest Goretti in January when a local weather station in Padstow 10 miles away recorded an unofficial 103 MPH wind but had no damage to the frame -unlike my house!
I have had glass broken in the past but it is 2-3 mm ordinary greenhouse glass and I note nowadays you sensibly use toughened glass.
Most of the breakages have been my fault leaving the frame open during severe weather.
I use it year round and in the summer it acts as an extra greenhouse for bush tomatoes, salads and herbs.
I often remove the top glass in the summer and stow it in the frame inside the shelving.
Access Note: We think this cold frame dates from the mid 1980’s, so 40 years old at the time of the photos.
AW – Raised beds and 4ft x 4ft cold frame
Mr AW had a series of raised beds for the garden, along with a 4ft x 4ft raised bed and a cold frame on top. The benefit of a cold frame on top of a raised bed is that the soil will warm up much easier in the spring – giving a boost to early season crops.

Old Aluminium Cold Frame
This image shows an old model at least 35 years old. The customer was enquiring about spares to refurbish the unit, but as you can see, it is still in very good condition and has most of the original glass in it.
Chatsworth in Smokey Grey
This customer was very pleased with their Chatsworth Mini greenhouse and had it full of tomatoes.
