Shade Cover Benefits

A greenhouse is a great way of protecting more delicate crops and providing an early start to the growing season. Access greenhouses are famous for their excellent ventilation, but on south-facing aspects the late-spring and summer sun can be intense.

A shade reduces the amount of light inside the greenhouse, keeping things cooler and protecting more delicate plants and seedlings.

The Shade Material

The shade is manufactured from a plastic covered open weave material designed to give an approximately 60% list reduction inside the greenhouse.

The plastic coating allows the material to be cleaned easily and also has an anti-bacterial coating to reduce any mould build up. The mesh is designed for outdoor use and can be left outside all year.

When to use a shade cover

SPRING

In the Spring the shade will need to be rolled up and down frequently as conditions are changeable. In late Spring, although the temperatures are lower, the sun’s intensity is increasing – by May the sun’s power will mean the shade should be used frequently, especially if the greenhouse south facing.

Summer

On hot summer days the shade can be left permanently on the greenhouse – in very hot weather the glass sheets underneath the shade can be partially opened to allow the warm air inside to ventilate out.

Autumn

As with the Spring the shade will need to be rolled up and down frequently as conditions are changeable, especially in September. As the sun gets lower in the sky, you may wish to shade the front on the greenhouse as well.

Winter

The shade does have thermal properties as well – the material is also used on commercial fridge displays, so the shade can be used on cold nights in winter to reduce heat loss if heating the greenhouse.

Classsic Roller Shades

Our Classic Roller shades are designed to be fitted permanently on to the top of the greenhouse and then rolled down when required. The shade material is long enough to go all the way to the floor, even on the largest models.

On the taller models a shepherds hook is available to pull the shade down.

Value Magnetic Shades

The Value shades have a magnetic strip which fits to the top of the framework, allowing the shade itself to be quickly fitted and removed from the greenhouse.

The shade then rolls down the roof area to cover the roof, or can be unrolled completely and cover the roof and the top front panel. Bungee straps hold the cover in place on the roof or the roof and front, using fixing points bolted to the framework.

Classic Magnetic Shades

For the Classic range there is the option of a magnetic shade. These are not so long, so will only cover the top half of the double height models. The shades have a magnetic strip which fits to the top of the framework, allowing the shade itself to be quickly fitted and removed from the greenhouse.

The shade then rolls down the roof area to cover the roof, or can be unrolled completely and cover the roof and the top front panel. Bungee straps hold the cover in place, clipping to the corner trims.
