What are hose pipe fittings?

Hose pipe fittings are small devices that provide a robust and leak-proof connection between your garden tap and hose pipe. These are vital components that control and direct the water flow, enabling you to water your plants with ease.

What are they used for?

Primarily, hose pipe fittings, such as hose connectors and hose adapters, enable a secure connection between the garden tap and your hose pipe.

This connection allows for seamless water flow, making essential garden tasks like watering your plants, cleaning your patio or filling your garden pond effortless and efficient. When it comes to hose adapters, they are used to connect sprinklers, spray guns or hoses to a single tap.

Types of hose pipe fittings

Hose adapters

Hose adapters are a must-have necessity in any green space, allowing you to connect your hose pipe to various types of taps.

They enable you to use a single tap for more than one purpose, such as running a sprinkler or filling a watering can. They are also known as multi-way tap connectors or tap splitters.

We have a wide range of hose adapters that are compatible with a variety of garden watering systems.

Hose connectors

As the name suggests, hose connectors provide a secure connection between the tap and the hose pipe. These are crucial when you need a leak-proof and tight fit to ensure uninterrupted flow of water.

Our snap-on brass tap and garden hose connectors are professional versions of the popular tap and garden hose connectors from manufacturers such as Hozelock and Gardena.

Benefits of hose pipe fittings

Hose pipe fittings offer several benefits that make them essential accessories for connecting hoses to various watering and irrigation systems. Here are some of the advantages of using hose pipe fittings:

Leak prevention

Hose pipe fittings are designed to create tight and secure connections between hoses and other watering or irrigation components. Properly fitted fittings minimise the risk of leaks, which can lead to water wastage and inefficiency in the watering system.

Easy installation

Hose pipe fittings are generally easy to install, requiring no special tools. Most fittings use a simple push-and-twist or screw-on mechanism, making them user-friendly and accessible to gardeners of all skill levels.

Versatility

Hose pipe fittings come in a wide range of types and sizes to accommodate different hose diameters and connection requirements. This versatility allows users to connect hoses to various water sources, sprinklers, spray nozzles, or other garden watering systems and accessories.

Compatibility

These fittings are designed to be compatible with standard hose sizes and materials. Whether you have a rubber hose, vinyl hose, or reinforced hose, you can find fittings that work seamlessly with your particular hose type.

Durability

High-quality hose pipe fittings are typically made from durable materials such as brass, stainless steel, or rugged plastic. These materials ensure that the fittings can withstand the stresses of regular use, exposure to the elements, and resist corrosion over time.

Flexibility and manoeuvrability

With hose pipe fittings, it’s easy to connect and disconnect hoses quickly, allowing you to move hoses around your garden with ease. This flexibility is particularly useful when watering different areas or when storing hoses after use.

Water flow control

Some hose pipe fittings, such as shut-off valves or adjustable nozzles, offer control over the water flow. This feature allows you to regulate the water pressure or shut off the flow when needed, contributing to water conservation efforts.

Repairability

If a hose becomes damaged or the fitting wears out, you can replace the fittings without having to replace the entire hose. This cost-effective option prolongs the life of your hoses and reduces waste.

Customisation

Hose pipe fittings enable you to customise your watering system according to your specific needs. You can add splitters, connectors, or extension fittings to create complex watering setups, covering multiple areas or different types of plants.

Features of our hose pipe fittings

Our brass hose fittings are designed with a focus on strength, durability, and ease of use, with brass offering longevity that other materials may not.

Connectors

  • Stainless steel ball bearings lock onto the tap connector, while the nylon teeth dig into the outer wall of the hose.
  • A brass outer compression ring can be tightened more to improve the ‘bite’ into the hose than their plastic equivalent.
  • The inner core of the hose connector is manufactured from limescale resistant material to reduce problems in hard water areas.
  • Being far stronger than plastic, any tugs on the hose will not shear the fitting off the tap.
  • A thick washer on the inside of the tap fittings ensures a leak-free connection onto the tap.
  • Compatible with the popular Gardena and Hozelock type garden hose fittings.

Adapters

  • Cast brass tap manifolds allow two or three hoses to be connected to a single tap.
  • Each outlet is fitted with a leak free ball valve to allow the manifold to withstand full mains pressure, which is essential if using an irrigation timer.
  • The taps use stainless steel 1/4 turn balls inside which are mounted in Teflon seals for durability.
  • Manufactured in cast brass, which is then chromed. The levers for the valves are cast metal with an easy-grip surface finish.
  • Our brass hose adapters are anti-rust, meaning they won’t corrode in damp or harsh weather conditions. However, they do need to be protected from frost.
  • Unlike plastic versions, these brass hose fittings are designed to withstand mains water pressure, making them compatible for use with a timer.

How do I know which hose pipe fitting I need?

The type of hose pipe fitting you require is dictated by the task you’re undertaking and the type of tap your garden has. For regular watering tasks, a connector is typically what you need to join your hose pipe to your garden tap.

Choosing the right size of fitting

Choosing the correct size of the fitting is crucial. It should match the diameter of your hose pipe and the size of your tap. An ill-fitting connection can lead to water leakage and inefficient watering.

Outdoor tap

How to attach hose pipe fittings to outside taps

Attaching a hose pipe fitting to an outside tap is straightforward. Firstly, ensure that your fitting and hose pipe are compatible in size.

Next, simply screw the connector or adapter onto your tap and push your hose pipe onto the other end of the connector. Ensure it’s snug and secure to prevent leaks.

Care and maintenance tips

You should regularly check your brass hose fittings for any signs of damage or wear. Keeping them clean and dry when not in use can help prevent corrosion. And, like all fittings, to prevent frost damage, they should be drained down in winter with any valves left on the open position.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s the best material for hose pipe fittings?

Brass is widely considered as the superior material due to its durability and corrosion-resistant qualities.

  • What are your hose pipe fittings made of?

Our fittings are made of brass, ensuring longevity and reliability. Our brass fittings offer a far superior product at very little extra cost.

  • Are brass hose fittings better than plastic?

Yes, brass fittings are generally more durable and resistant to wear and tear compared to plastic ones. Also, if you are planning on mounting a timer, plastic fittings are not suitable due to the mains water pressure.

  • Do brass hose fittings corrode?

Brass is highly resistant to corrosion, but not immune. Regular care and maintenance can prevent any corrosion-related issues.

  • Are garden hose fittings universal?

While many hose fittings are designed to fit a standard tap or hose pipe, they’re not always universal. It’s best to check the product specifications before purchase.

  • What’s the difference between male and female fittings?

Male fittings refer to those with threads on the outside, while female fittings have threads on the inside. These are terms used to describe how fittings connect with each other or with a tap.

  • How do I prevent leaks in hose pipe fittings?

Ensure that you have chosen the right size of fitting for your hose pipe and tap. Regularly check for signs of damage and replace any worn-out fittings.

  • What is the difference between threaded and quick-release fittings?

Threaded fittings are screwed onto the tap or hose pipe, while quick-release fittings allow for easy and quick connections by simply pushing and clicking the two components together.

  • How often should I replace hose pipe fittings?

It depends on the quality of the fitting and how well it’s maintained. Brass fittings, if well cared for, can last for a number of years. However, if you notice any leakage or signs of damage, it’s time to replace them.
