Classic Garden Growhouses

Our Classic Garden Growhouses are compact freestanding greenhouses designed to provide maximum growing space without the footprint of a conventional greenhouse. Made in the UK from architectural-grade aluminium and glazed with 4mm toughened safety glass, the range includes low, shallow and full-height models for patios, small gardens and larger growing spaces. Adjustable shelving and sliding panels make them ideal for raising seedlings, growing herbs, salads, chillies and tomatoes, or protecting plants through the colder months. What is a garden growhouse?

A garden growhouse is an outdoor structure designed to help extend the growing season. The controlled environment of a growhouse provides protection from extreme weather conditions, pests and other environmental factors that can limit plant growth.

Our aluminium growhouses will enable you to grow delicate plants which might not survive without added protection, while many gardeners use growhouses to start seedlings early in the season, or to overwinter plants that would not survive the cold temperatures of winter.

Features of our Classic Growhouses

Over the years we’ve added many useful features to our range of Classic Growhouses, all of which are manufactured in the UK from the best available materials.

  • The sturdy frames of our garden Growhouses are made from architectural-grade aluminium which come with a 25 year framework guarantee.
  • We use 4mm toughened safety glass as standard, which is the same type of glass which is used for domestic double glazing units.
  • Our Growhouses come with adjustable, removable shelves for maximum versatility to make the most of the space available.
  • The unique sliding doors of our Classic Growhouses allow easy access and great ventilation, preventing overheating in the summer.

The benefits of a garden growhouse

There are many benefits of our Classic Growhouses that are designed to make your gardening life easier and more enjoyable than ever before.

  • With an extended growing season you can start planting earlier in the season and continue growing later into autumn or even winter.
  • Protect your plants from pests, such as insects, slugs and rodents, as well as from harsh weather conditions like heavy rain, hail and snow.
  • By controlling the temperature and humidity within the growhouse, you can create optimal growing conditions for your plants.
  • As our aluminium greenhouses can be moved around your garden, they offer a choice of flexible growing options in full light or shade.
  • A garden growhouse is less expensive than constructing a full greenhouse, making it a more accessible option for many gardeners.
  • A wide variety of plants can be cultivated in a growhouse, with faster, healthier growth and a potentially larger harvest.

Growhouse Accessories and Spares

We’ve a wide range of Growhouse accessories for the Classic Range to allow it to be customised to your needs.

  • Shade Covers clip on the outside of the Classic Growhouse to reduce the amount of light entering. Ideal for sunny locations and more delicate crops.
  • Louvre vents open and close automatically to ventilate the frame on warmer days. Beneficial early in the season when you need to completely close the Growhouse at night.
  • Shelf covers allow smaller pots to be placed on the tubular metal shelves.
  • As for Classic Growhouse spares, we’ve everything from channel liners and replacement parts right down to nuts and bolts. We’ve also replacement glass, although, for peace of mind, you could take out our two-year accidental glass breakage cover.
  • All our Classic Growhouses can be colour coated in a choice of seven attractive colours.

What to grow in a growhouse

The versatile environment of a garden Growhouse allows you to grow a variety of plants throughout the year.

Vegetables, such as leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, grow particularly well in a Growhouse. As do herbs which prefer warm temperatures and high humidity, like basil, coriander, parsley, thyme and rosemary.

Depending on the size of your Growhouse, small fruit trees and bushes can easily be cultivated, including potted citrus fruits, figs and even grapes. The protective environment of a Growhouse is also ideal for delicate flowers and ornamental plants, such as orchids, begonias and petunias.

How to use a growhouse

How to use a Growhouse

A Growhouse gives you a sheltered growing space for raising young plants, extending the growing season and protecting more tender crops from cold, wind and heavy rain. The adjustable shelving and removable staging on many models also make it easy to change the layout as your plants grow.

Choose a suitable position

For the best results, place your Growhouse in a bright position where it will receive plenty of natural light. A sheltered spot can also help protect it from strong winds and make it easier to maintain a more stable growing environment.

Make the most of the shelving

The adjustable shelves are ideal for seed trays, pots, herbs and young plants. As crops grow taller, shelves or centre staging can be removed on suitable models to create additional vertical space for plants such as tomatoes, chillies and peppers.

Ventilate in warm weather

Good ventilation is important, particularly during spring and summer when temperatures can rise quickly behind glass. Open the sliding panels to allow fresh air to circulate and help prevent excessive heat and humidity. Automatic louvre vents are also available for many Classic Growhouses and can help regulate ventilation when temperatures rise.

Keep plants watered

Plants growing in pots and trays can dry out more quickly under glass, especially in warm weather. Check them regularly and water as required. Many Classic Growhouses include a mist watering system, helping you water plants evenly and making regular watering easier. Timers and other Growhouse watering accessories are also available if you want to automate watering.

Use your Growhouse throughout the year

In spring, a Growhouse is ideal for raising seedlings and young plants before they are moved outside. During summer it provides a warm, sheltered environment for crops such as tomatoes, chillies, peppers, herbs and salads.

In autumn, the extra protection can help extend the growing season, while in winter a Growhouse can shelter hardy plants and overwinter more tender plants. An unheated Growhouse is not necessarily frost-free, so vulnerable plants may still need additional protection during periods of severe cold.

Adjust the space as your plants grow

One of the advantages of a Growhouse is its flexibility. Shelves can be repositioned or removed as plants develop, allowing you to use the same space for seed trays in spring, taller crops in summer and protected plants during autumn and winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most domestic Growhouses are unlikely to need a separate planning application, but the rules depend on your property, where the structure will be positioned and which part of the UK you live in.

In England, greenhouses and similar garden buildings can often fall within permitted development rights provided the relevant limits and conditions are met. Extra restrictions can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and some other properties, so check with your local planning authority if you are unsure.

  • Classic Growhouses are manufactured in the UK with architectural-grade aluminium frames, stainless-steel fixings and 4mm toughened safety glass. The aluminium framework carries a 25-year guarantee.

The glass provides good light transmission and, unlike plastic glazing, will not become cloudy with age. Classic models also use adjustable, removable shelving so the growing space can be changed as plants develop through the season.

  • A Growhouse works on the same basic principle as a greenhouse, creating a protected environment that helps extend the growing season.

The main difference is the compact design: Access Growhouses are intended to provide useful growing space without the footprint of a conventional walk-in greenhouse. Plants are reached from outside through sliding panels, so space that would normally be used for a central path can be used for growing instead.

  • Both ranges use aluminium frames and toughened safety glass, but the Classic range includes more features as standard. Classic Growhouses use 4mm toughened glass and include features such as a watering system, while the Value range uses 3mm toughened horticultural glass and is designed to provide a simpler, lower-cost option.

Value models do not include the watering system, corner trims or full-length handles supplied with the Classic range.

  • Classic Growhouses can be used for a wide range of crops, including herbs, salads, seedlings, chillies and peppers, as well as plants that need extra protection in spring or autumn.

Taller and deeper models can also accommodate tomatoes and other taller crops. In winter, a Growhouse is useful for protecting and overwintering suitable tender plants, although an unheated Growhouse should not be assumed to remain frost-free.

  • Yes. A Classic Growhouse can be useful throughout the year: for raising seedlings in spring, growing heat-loving crops in summer, extending harvests into autumn and protecting suitable plants through winter.

However, an unheated Growhouse is not guaranteed to remain frost-free during cold weather. More tender plants may need additional insulation or a suitable greenhouse heater when hard frosts are forecast.

  • The sliding doors on Classic Growhouses can be opened a little in cooler weather or much wider on warm days, while the roof panels can also be opened for extra summer ventilation. This helps release excess heat and humidity.

Automatic louvre vents are available for many models, and external shading can also be added in particularly sunny positions. Ventilation should be increased as temperatures rise rather than leaving the Growhouse fully closed on a hot day.
