What is a garden growhouse?

A garden growhouse is an outdoor structure designed to help extend the growing season. The controlled environment of a growhouse provides protection from extreme weather conditions, pests and other environmental factors that can limit plant growth.

Our aluminium growhouses will enable you to grow delicate plants which might not survive without added protection, while many gardeners use growhouses to start seedlings early in the season, or to overwinter plants that would not survive the cold temperatures of winter.

We have a range of growhouses available, from the 6’ 5” Chatsworth designed to provide as much growing space as a small conventional greenhouse, but in a much more compact footprint, to the 2’ 8” City Growhouse able to fit in even the smallest urban garden.

The benefits of a garden growhouse

There are many benefits of our Classic Growhouses that are designed to make your gardening life easier and more enjoyable than ever before.

  • With an extended growing season you can start planting earlier in the season and continue growing later into autumn or even winter.
  • Protect your plants from pests, such as insects, slugs and rodents, as well as from harsh weather conditions like heavy rain, hail and snow.
  • By controlling the temperature and humidity within the growhouse, you can create optimal growing conditions for your plants.
  • As our aluminium greenhouses can be moved around your garden, they offer a choice of flexible growing options in full light or shade.
  • A garden growhouse is less expensive than constructing a full greenhouse, making it a more accessible option for many gardeners.
  • A wide variety of plants can be cultivated in a growhouse, with faster, healthier growth and a potentially larger harvest.

Features of our Classic Growhouses

Over the years we’ve added many useful features to our range of Classic Growhouses, all of which are manufactured in the UK from the best available materials.

  • The sturdy frames of our garden Growhouses are made from architectural-grade aluminium which come with a 25 year framework guarantee.
  • We use 4mm toughened safety glass as standard, which is the same type of glass which is used for domestic double glazing units.
  • Our Growhouses come with adjustable, removable shelves for maximum versatility to make the most of the space available.
  • The unique sliding doors of our Classic Growhouses allow easy access and great ventilation, preventing overheating in the summer.

Growhouse Accessories and Spares

We’ve a wide range of Growhouse accessories for the Classic Range to allow it to be customised to your needs.

  • Shade Covers clip on the outside of the Classic Growhouse to reduce the amount of light entering. Ideal for sunny locations and more delicate crops.
  • Louvre vents open and close automatically to ventilate the frame on warmer days. Beneficial early in the season when you need to completely close the Growhouse at night.
  • Shelf covers allow smaller pots to be placed on the tubular metal shelves.
  • As for Classic Growhouse spares, we’ve everything from channel liners and replacement parts right down to nuts and bolts. We’ve also replacement glass, although, for peace of mind, you could take out our two-year accidental glass breakage cover.
  • All our Classic Growhouses can be colour coated in a choice of seven attractive colours.

How to use a growhouse

Here are a few tips to help you maximise the benefits of your garden Growhouse.

Choose the right location

Before setting up your Growhouse, choose a location that receives plenty of sunlight and is protected from strong winds. Make sure the ground is level and free of debris or rocks.

Prepare the soil

If you plan to plant directly in the ground within the Growhouse, make sure the soil is well-drained, preferably with the addition of compost or other organic matter.

Ventilate properly

It’s important to provide adequate ventilation within the Growhouse to prevent overheating and excess humidity. In addition to opening the sliding doors, in hot weather, the roof panels can be removed.

Water regularly

Plants grown in a Growhouse may require more frequent watering than those grown outdoors, as the controlled environment can lead to faster evaporation. So monitor moisture levels to prevent dry soil.

As a rule of thumb, you should give your plants a quick drink to start with, then let that water soak in before watering again more extensively. The water should just be running out of the bottom of the container by the end, indicating that it’s reached the roots.

Ideally all watering should be done first thing in the morning, to avoid losing moisture through evaporation throughout the day. During the summer months, you may also want to water in the evening so that the soil can soak overnight.

If you’re not sure whether your garden needs watering, the best way to check is by looking at soil a spade’s depth down. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.

Control pests

While a garden Growhouse can protect your plants from pests and diseases, it’s still important to monitor them regularly and take preventative measures as needed.

Harvest regularly

Don’t forget to harvest your plants regularly to encourage continued growth and prevent overcrowding within your mini Growhouse. This is especially important for fast-growing crops like tomatoes or cucumbers.

What to grow in a growhouse

The versatile environment of a garden Growhouse allows you to grow a variety of plants throughout the year.

Vegetables, such as leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, grow particularly well in a Growhouse. As do herbs which prefer warm temperatures and high humidity, like basil, coriander, parsley, thyme and rosemary.

Depending on the size of your Growhouse, small fruit trees and bushes can easily be cultivated, including potted citrus fruits, figs and even grapes. The protective environment of a Growhouse is also ideal for delicate flowers and ornamental plants, such as orchids, begonias and petunias.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need planning permission for growhouses?

Due to their small size, and the fact that they can be classed as a temporary structure, it is highly unlikely that your garden Growhouse will require planning permission.

However, as regulations differ from council to council, you may want to contact your local authority for full clarification.

  • What are your growhouses made of?

Our frames of our Classic Growhouses are constructed in the UK from architectural-grade aluminium that comes with a 25-year guarantee.

  • Is a growhouse the same as a greenhouse?

Usually, Growhouses are just smaller versions of regular greenhouses. So Growhouses, obviously, take up less space. The big difference between the two is that a Growhouse can be moved around a garden to make the most of varying conditions.

  • What’s the difference between your classic and value growhouses?

Our Value Growhouses have been introduced to provide a good quality frame at a competitive price. Although built to the same exacting standards as our classic garden Growhouses, value models do not have the additional extras.

Our Value Growhouses still have toughened safety glass, but it’s standard 3mm horticultural thickness, rather than the 4mm of the main range.

The Value Range uses 3mm thick toughened glass and does not have a watering system, corner trims or full length handles.

  • What is the easiest thing to grow in a Growhouse?

Salad vegetables are one of the most popular things to cultivate in a Growhouse, mainly because they are easy to grow and produce high yields.

Particularly well-suited to growing in spring and summer are tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and aubergines, which will thrive in the warmth. Courgettes, cucumbers and squashes also work well.

If you’re looking to extend your growing seasons beyond summer, and even into winter, hardy plants which need a cooler temperature can easily be cultivated in a Growhouse. So carrots, onions, kale, cabbage and broccoli will all be ideal.
