Small Greenhouses

Our small greenhouses have been designed with small gardens in mind and are a perfect solution if you have limited outdoor space.

Small greenhouses are very narrow in depth, allowing it to sit easily in a narrow passageway or a small courtyard garden.

What are small greenhouses?

Small greenhouses are glass structures designed to grow produce in limited outdoor spaces. If you have a slim garden, patio, or balcony, a small garden greenhouse can help you produce out-of-season plants all year round, despite extreme weather conditions.

Benefits of small greenhouses

Other than their compact size, the benefits of glass greenhouses are widespread. More specifically, these small freestanding structures can:

  • Create a favourable environment to grow your favourite plants and produce all year round.
  • Prevent undesired pests from ruining your crops and reduce the need for pesticide use.
  • Foster a stabilised climate to grow seedlings in the spring and prepare them for hardening off.
  • Excellent quality as they’re glazed with toughened safety glass and come with a 25 year guarantee.
  • Use adjustable shelves, allowing you to have your plants laid out exactly how you wish, making the most of the space available.
  • Ideal for gardeners who are too busy or don’t have time to look after a larger selection of plants.
  • Reduce the need for supermarket trips as you’ll have a place to grow fresh herbs and vegetables.
  • Help gardeners with limited outdoor spaces make use of greenhouse structures.

Features of our small greenhouses

Our miniature greenhouses have adjustable shelving, so you can customise your space to suit various crops or remove extra units to provide more space for ample growth.

  • The sturdy frames of our greenhouses are made from architectural-grade aluminium which come with a 25 year framework guarantee.
  • We use 4mm toughened safety glass as standard, which is the same type of glass which is used for domestic double glazing units.
  • Our greenhouses come with adjustable, removable shelves for maximum versatility to make the most of the space available.
  • The unique sliding doors of our Classic Small greenhouses allow easy access and great ventilation, preventing overheating in the summer.

Small greenhouse Accessories and Spares

We’ve a wide range of Small greenhouse accessories for the Classic Range to allow it to be customised to your needs.

  • Shade Covers clip on the outside of the Classic greenhouse to reduce the amount of light entering. Ideal for sunny locations and more delicate crops.
  • Shelf covers allow smaller pots to be placed on the tubular metal shelves.
  • As for Classic Small greenhouse spares, we’ve everything from channel liners and replacement parts right down to nuts and bolts. We’ve also replacement glass, although, for peace of mind, you could take out our two-year accidental glass breakage cover.
  • All our Small greenhouses can be colour coated in a choice of seven attractive colours.

When to use small greenhouses

Spring

Spring

Our small glass greenhouse shelves are excellent for growing seedlings during spring as they will require plenty of warmth and light to ensure they are effectively hardened off.

Summer

Summer

In the hotter summer months, you can remove the shelves of your small greenhouse to transplant existing crops outside and replace them with taller Mediterranean crops, such as tomatoes or chillies.

Autumn

Autumn

Autumn is a rather unpredictable season to grow plants, but our greenhouses provide young plants and cuttings protection from cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and mild frosts.

Winter

Winter

As temperatures drop to below zero in the winter, a small glass greenhouse will help shield plants from rain, wind, and snow, allowing them to survive any frosts or periods of extreme cold.

FAQs

  • What’s the difference between small greenhouses and miniature greenhouses?

Miniature greenhouses are great for smaller plants such as herbs and seedlings, whereas a small outdoor greenhouse provides more ample space, sunlight, and ventilation, allowing you to grow fuller-sized plants, such as flowers and vegetables.

  • Is it worth buying a small greenhouse?

Although they don’t take up much ground space, it is surprising how much you can grow in a little space.

The integrated shelving system allows growing space to be maximised and shelves can be adjusted for height or dropped flat when not required. They can even be removed to maximise available space.

Typically, all of the shelves will be used in the early Spring when there are lots of tender plants waiting for the frosts to pass; then some of the shelves are removed for Summer crops such as Tomatoes, Peppers and Chillies.

Many crops now have compact varieties available to reduce space taken up in the greenhouse.

  • What can I grow in a small greenhouse?

In your greenhouse for a small garden, you can grow almost everything you could in a much larger greenhouse. There are many smaller varieties of tomato and pepper plants that work better in a small space and will crop heavily, so you won’t miss out on the harvest.

  • What is the best heater for a small greenhouse?

Paraffin heaters can protect your plants from cold temperatures and produce extra carbon dioxide which helps boost growth. Alternatively, you can make your own warm igloo tealight heater by making candle flower pots.

  • How much does a small greenhouse cost?

Our small greenhouses start from £329, such as our Half Westminster 3’ 4’ small Greenhouse to around £1,000 depending on your choice of size and model.

  • How do I anchor down a small greenhouse?

Unlike cheap plastic small greenhouses, our models are designed not to blow away!

The toughened safety glass gives the frame weight and the absence of lifting lids mean there is nothing for the wind to catch.

In addition, our lean to miniature greenhouses come with fixings to anchor them to the wall and also the floor. Freestanding models have ground fixings for concrete or patio slabs. If you just have earth at your chosen location, just lay a few slabs to provide a stable base.

  • How do I ventilate a small greenhouse?

The front and roof of the small greenhouse has sliding panels for excellent ventilation.

On bright early Spring days, just open the front doors an inch or so. In the height of Summer, fully open the front doors and slide the roof panels open.

During heatwaves, the roof panels can be removed for maximum ventilation.

  • Do small greenhouses work in the winter?

Yes, small greenhouses are designed to work all year round, so in more southern areas you can grow fresh salads and herbs 365 days a year. Even in more northerly areas, you will get around 10 months of growing – far longer than outside.

In late Autumn, when crops have stopped growing in the garden, the sun is still strong enough to warm the air inside the greenhouse, allowing active growing of many crops.

Obviously things will grow more slowly in the Winter, but there are many Winter varieties available which are suited to cold conditions.

  • Do small greenhouses need to be in the sun?

The best position for a small glass greenhouse is partial shade and sun, which can typically be found in East or West-facing areas.

However, if the only location you have is full sun, simply fit a shade cover. A shady location can be used for cuttings and seedlings and over-wintering, but would not be suitable for summer crops.

  • What is the best spot for small greenhouses?

The best small greenhouses are those placed in partial shade and sunlight. These kinds of conditions are typically found in East or West-facing spaces.
